This book is a very helpful guide for any parent trying to navigate the elementary and secondary school system. Includes information on private and public schools and anything in between (charter, magnet schools). Also provides good advice for dealing with teachers and administrators in order to help ensure your student's success in the school environment. Terrific organization of chapters; love the index. Takes into account a variety of situations and addresses parent's rights within the school context. Also provides a very balanced view regarding the value of standardized testing and scoring, which can be very confusing to both students and parents. Quite a valuable resource which I would recommend to any parent of school age children.

Educator/writer Molland provides information and answers to questions I thought I should have known about our school system, but was afraid to ask. This is a reader-friendly, easily accessible guide for every parent. Read it now, arm yourself with information BEFORE you actually need to inquire of or confront the authorities at your local school. You'll be glad you did - in fact, both you and your child(ren) will be happy you did. This is a must-read for all parents. I highly recommend this very important new guide.

I have four year old twins and am constantly anxious about navigating them through the public school system. This book is just what I was looking for. The section about preparing for kindergarten has totally given me some tips and a place to start. I'm finding the information about charter and magnet schools, open enrollment, and teacher conferences particularly helpful as well. The book is easy to read, and broken into logical sections. I would recommend this to any mom!

This well-organized, easy-to-use guide has answers to questions that I didn't even know I would have about today's education system. The discussion of sometimes difficult topics, Q & A, lists of additional resources, and glossary of "Edu-Speak" terms will make it easier for parents to communicate with their kids' teachers without feeling intimidated by their lack of familiarity with schools today.I only wish this book had been available when my child was a student, I would have felt so much more comfortable being involved with his education.
