I bought this for re-reading - definitely a five star read if you're interested in the man or the time. However, I have to comment on the book itself. It's a thin, no-nonsense little volume made of the same type of paper you used to find in children's books, with a thin, glossy cover, obviously made for reading, not storage or eternal shelf-life. It's an easy read, pretty big print, would be great for kids, very non-intimidating for younger readers. Also, the idea that this book could be produced and shipped and in my hand for less than the cost of a cup of coffee is ridiculous and amazing. I assume it's in the public domain, so there are no royalties to pay, just printing costs, but still - two dollars (with prime) shipped!?Five stars for the printing and the wonderful deal, even aside from the content itself.

Great, great book for a great price.

Very easy to read and great insights into the condition and crimes of slavery, the American Civil War, and Reconstruction. For those uninitiated to Frederick Douglass the introduction by Foner is helpful, but the prose of Douglass really speaks to the reader. Totally worthwhile.

Picked up a copy of this book and found it very educational and moving. Sad take on US history but story that needs to be told.
